From expert physician to exceptional leader.

Physician leadership coaching from a physician executive.

Chief Complaint:
Trained to diagnose and treat.
Struggling to influence and lead.”

You’ve spent your career mastering medicine. Now you’re being asked to master leadership. The transition means navigating two demanding and often conflicting roles in healthcare: caring for patients and leading teams. Nobody really prepares you for it.

The Challenges of the Physician-to-Leader Transition

  • Trained for a Different Role: Most physicians enter leadership roles with little formal leadership training. Suddenly, clinical expertise isn't enough.

  • The Identity Shock: Medicine rewards decisiveness and expertise. Leadership requires influence, patience, and vulnerability.

  • The “Doctor’s Orders” Reflex: What makes you effective in a clinical crisis can undermine your influence in an organizational one.

  • The True Cost of Failure: If the transition doesn't go well, it can have a lasting impact on the physician’s confidence and career, while the organization absorbs a substantial financial and cultural cost.

My perspective comes from living on both sides of this transition. As a physician executive with an MBA and former Chief Medical Officer, I’ve led complex organizational initiatives, navigated difficult people and culture challenges, and spent years developing physicians into stronger leaders.

Early in my career, I learned that being the person with the answer wasn't enough. I had to become more balanced—learning to listen, build trust, and understand different perspectives—in order to be a better leader.

The JZ Way: Leading with Character and Connection leadership development framework

The JZ Way™: Leading with Character and Connection

My physician-specific approach to developing exceptional leaders.

Having made the transition from physician to leader myself, I developed The JZ Way™: Leading with Character and Connection by applying the familiar clinical framework to leadership development.

The JZ Way™ is my diagnostic-driven methodology. The Physician Leadership Packages are how I apply it.

Just as every patient deserves an individualized evaluation, every physician leader deserves an approach tailored to their experience, challenges, and goals. We’ll identify the leadership habits that may be limiting your influence, strengthen the skills that matter most, and develop the character and connection to lead with greater impact.

  • HISTORY | Your Story

Together, we’ll start by mapping out where you’ve been. Then we’ll look at your current clinical environment, the specific cultural pressures you're facing, and what you actually want your day-to-day work life to look like.

  • EXAM | Your Discovery

We'll uncover the leadership habits and recurring challenges that may be limiting your effectiveness and influence.

  • DIAGNOSTIC TESTING | Leadership Analytics

Using the scientifically validated 360° leadership assessment, the Leadership Circle Profile, you’ll gain objective insight into your leadership strengths, reactive tendencies, and the patterns that may be quietly undermining your impact.

  • ASSESSMENT & PLAN | Your Individualized Leadership Prescription

Based on everything we've uncovered, we’ll create a personalized leadership development plan with practical strategies designed to strengthen your effectiveness, expand your influence, and help you lead with greater confidence.

  • THE PROGNOSIS | Your Transformation

The goal isn't to become a better administrator. It's to become the kind of physician leader who earns trust, builds meaningful relationships, and leads with character and connection.

WHAT CHANGES?

Through diagnostic-driven leadership development, you’ll:

  • Lead physicians and teams with greater confidence

  • Build trust and connection

  • Influence without relying on your authority

  • Navigate difficult conversations

  • Lead with greater self-awareness, intentionality, and impact

What Others Are Saying

As Chief of Staff at a large hospital, I rely on having an excellent partner in my Chief Medical Officer. Jon was not only that, but an innovative leader who brought passion and mission to his work. Cultivating young physician leaders is an important part of the long-term health of any medical staff, but is often overshadowed by the day-to-day operational needs of the hospital. Jon made sure that the development of our physician leaders was a top priority and brought his years of experience, talent, and wisdom to the task.

When we had challenging issues with some of our colleagues on the medical staff, he helped me to have those crucial conversations in a way that was firm but compassionate. Even though I am near the end of my career and have years of experience as a physician leader, I always found insight and inspiration when I worked with Jon.

Chief of Staff

JZ is a true BUILDER. He approaches both challenges and opportunities with remarkable thoughtfulness and innovation. Never content with the status quo, he is constantly seeking ways to improve healthcare, advance organizational goals, and inspire others to think creatively and embrace new ideas.

One of the wonderful geniuses of JZ is his ability to cultivate people. He has an incredible gift for nurturing others so they can grow and develop, and he is one of the strongest physician advocates I know. Throughout his career, he has invested deeply in teaching, mentoring, and inspiring physicians and other clinicians. To me, he is the Ultimate Physician Leader.
